Hi Jarrad,

Im off to Sydney 20th June and getting abit nervous aswell ha. Im booking into hostels to from what ive read into the best ones in Sydney seem to be Wake up and YHA.. they have a YHA in Brisbane, probably the best way to meet other backpackers to. Are you planning on staying in Brisbane or you looking to travel around?

You can also join the group to stay in touch while you're travelling.

To the OP: hostels are a pretty good way to meet other travellers – you already have something in common and most are already open to hanging out with strangers. As another option, in Melbourne there are usually a ton of travel meetups on meetup.com with a mix of local, travellers, and expats, but I'm not sure what the scene is like in Brisbane.

For cheap hostels, try the link at the top of the page. Travellerspoint accommodation is currently provided by both hostelworld and hostelbookers, with the added benefit of trusted reviews by other Travellerspoint members.

Good luck with your planning! Let us know if you're looking for any other tips.

A friend and I will be landing in Cairns on the 10th of April. We intend to spend at least a few months slowly making our way down the coast before bouncing to New Zealand and Southeast Asia. However, the only concrete plan is to meet cool people and follow the fun!

Feel free to add me on Facebook through my profile if you want to chat or get a group set up
