rastacourage has indicated that this thread is about Germany

My friends and I are beginning to book our stay in Berlin (4 nights) and I have some questions about which area would be the best place to stay since the city is huge.

Most of my affordable choices are in Mitte, but this seems to be a pretty large expanse of space.

I'm aware the city is vast, but would you suggest staying East or West of the river? How close to the city center would you suggest? Any particular areas that are "must sees"?

We're all in our 20s and would like to be fairly close to some good nightlife, and would like to be close to public transportation to easily get around..
Our top destinations for the city include the wall and the holocaust memorial museum, but we are really trying to see the "local" side of Berlin...

Any suggestions will be helpful, I know I'm being pretty vague

check out airbnb.com. we rented an apartment in Mitte through www.airbnb.com - it was in walking distance from the Rosenthalerpaltz train & tram station. Great area

I warmly recommend Ibis Berlin City Hotel Potsdamer Platz on the border line between West and East and close to everything
