Street sports in Africa

Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East Street sports in Africa

Hi all!

Not sure exactly where to post this as it's not strictly travel-related but I'm still hoping someone has thoughts on this :)

So we are a group of undergraduate students who are taking a course about the history and politics of Africa. For our final assignment we were given the topic "Sports in Africa" to write an essay on (and present at an upcoming Nordic-African forum so there's added incentive to do this well!).

We've decided on the theme "street sports" and how they can be used to create social spaces. We've decided to feature football (soccer) and skateboarding but as this is a quite massive essay we feel we could add one more sport. As "Street sports in Africa" yields quite a lot of football related search results I wonder if some locals or the commenters here who've traveled to Africa could help us out.

So the question is, do you know of any "street sports" other than those two that are popular in any African country? And if so, do you know any specific location (or community) where this sport is practiced?

All help is much appreciated! :)

I was in Malawi, Monkey bay; a man I met there played basketball, which I didn't expect as the surfaces don't seem to facilitate such a sport!

But football was definitely the main. Bare feet, on awful terrain. Using what looked like bin bags rolled up and tied, to make their football.

Also, (not really a sport) but the good old, hoop or wheel rolling seemed popular

Best of luck, hope that helps
