We went to the Galapagos at the end of our South America trip in January 2014. We landed at the airport on Baltra and got a bus ride to the town of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz and stayed three nights there. We then took the ferry to Isabela and stayed three nights at Puerto Villamil and then took the ferry to San Cristobal (via Puerto Ayora) and stayed a couple of nights in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno before flying out to Guayaquil from San Cristobal airport.

We booked all our accommodation using Trip Advisor and other reviews and then looking for the best deal on websites (booking.com, expedia, hostelbookers etc). We bought our tickets for the ferries two or three days in advance at the quayside. We deliberately didn't book a cruise because we don't like to travel that way (I know other people do - each to their own!) but when we arrived in Puerto Ayora there were many travel shops offering cheap five-, six-, seven- and eight-day cruises. I'm not sure of the quality of these but they did seem cheaper than those offered on websites before we left home for South America.

Looking back we'd probably have preferred a day less in Puerto Ayora and a day more in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno but the whole of the Galapagos was a wonderful ending to our summer holiday.

Firstly you need to get to the Galapagos - departures are from Quito via Guayaquil or direct from Guayaquil. Tame and Aerogal both fly there and the LANpass can be used to get you on Aerogal (that's how we travelled there). From the airports at either Baltra or San Cristobel it's easy to get into town - about an hour from Baltra to Puerto Ayora and just five minutes from San Cristobel airport to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Both these towns have lots of hostels and hotels of varying quality and prices (that's why we looked at reviews on Trip Advisor). They also have many travel shops so you can shop around to get a cruise if that's really what you want. Personally we preferred to buy day trips from the travel shops (we went to Kicker Rock from San Cristobel and to los Tuneles from Isabela) because we think they offer better value than packages. Similarly there are several ferry ticket offices on Isabela, San Cristobel and Santa Cruz and tickets are usually for departures at various times of the day (6am, 9am, 2pm depending where you're going to or from) and if you buy two or three journeys from the same booth, you can get discounts. We found this far cheaper and more flexible than buying a cruise and being herded around on a tour - whether we'd have seen more on a cruise we'll never know! As for the website -snip-, I have no idea whether these trips are good value or not - perhaps you need to go onto a review site to see what customers have said about these trips and the company's service. Happy researching!

There is never a bad time to visit the Galapagos! December through May is the breeding season for land birds, so it’s a great time to see unusual mating rituals. Also, if you are a turtle lover this is the time to be here as it’s when you can watch sea turtles nesting on the beach and in March through May you can often see land tortoises searching for mates. Blue-footed boobies mate during June and July typically, so it won’t be difficult to witness their beautiful mating ritual if you go then.

'High' or peak season coincides with North American and European summer and winter break so will find discounted rates if you choose to travel outside of those months.

As far as choosing hotels/cruises for your trip, I would highly recommend you read -snip- Good luck with your trip planning process!
