I am interrailing around Europe in the summer and was thinking of spending at least one week, maybe two in Italy.
Has anyone got any suggestions for the best destinations in Italy to stay for a couple of nights. I would like to hear about both inland cities and costal/beach towns. I am travelling on my own so would like to avoid any not so safe areas.
Also if anyone can recommend any hostels in Italy or advise where not to go i would like to hear it.
as far as coastal towns i would really recommend the area of cinque terra. its comprised of five small towns connected by rail and a path along the cliffs above the sea in the northwest of italy. i think it is an area of italy that has been made popular in america by the rick steves guide books. it is really beautiful though - a UNESCO heritage site. colorful buildings built into cliffs. lots of grandmothers sitting on stoops talking, kids playing soccer, and stray cats. you can check the lonely planet website for more info and descriptions of each of the five towns. i stayed in corniglia and loved it.
good luck with your planning!
South of italy is best place where you can find wonderfull see and low price to live (i don't wanna tell you how is magnificent to eat in south Italy because is too much good!)
I suggest you 3 areas: Sicila, Puglia e Sardegna.
I'm from Puglia and is real wonderfull in summer.
Hmmm...if you are stopping in Italy....you absolutely must stop in Lake Como, Italy. It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to...a lake surrounded by small towns..at the edge of a mountain range...beautiful. The accomodation in that area is very expensive, but I can suggest one place. There is a small town on Lake Como called Menaggio...it is one of I think only 3 hostels in the area. Anyway...it is cheap and clean..and they have dinner for you at night time. Also if you are looking to visit an island and avoid the crowds...I would suggest the the island of Ischia....it is in the bay of naples and a little less known than capri. I hope you have a good time in Italy...I am extremely jealous...I haven't been able to go back to Italy yet...but hopefully soon..hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!
