Hello Travellers,

Well i land i Melbourne in May on a WHV, Solo Travelling from Scotland at the ripe age of 29 (I hope i'm not too old for this backpacking).

So i am wondering what advice there is for a solo traveller who has never done this before? Any recommendations on Hostels? Where is best from work in the winter?

Is there anyone else travelling solo at the same time etc?

Any suggestions of a travel itinerary, I was think of heading up the East Coast to cairns - as many people do i am guessing.
Was thinking up going on the grey hound hop on and off pass, does anyone have experience of this and recommend a better way?

Sorry loads of questions!

Thanks

Stew

Hey Stew!

You'll love it! You're age I think will be an advantage for you when you're trying to find work as I found it help a little in my case. But it makes absolutely no difference otherwise!

I'm just finishing up my 1st year of WHV and hoping to extend for my 2nd so fingers crossed. I'm new to this website and I just posted a thread was nosing around and noticed you asked same questions about the greyhound thing.

I'm also gonna do the East Coast but Cairns to Gold Coast early June so I think we might miss each other but maybe we'll meet another day elsewhere :)

I spent most of my time working down in Melbourne it's the best city ever. Highly recommend it. Weather is very unpredictable but it's not too bad.
Hostels are all pretty decent over here and you generally get a lot of choice. When you're wanting to stay in big cities or popular tourist areas but ahead as they fill up pretty quick. If you're staying for a few months working I recommend renting short term a shared apt or something it's much nicer and doesn't cost much more.

Anyways just wanted to say hi and maybe we'll meet on your travels one day! Good luck!
