Add "reply via private message" to "travel companions" posts

Travel Forums System Talk Add "reply via private message" to "travel companions" posts

Haven't seen any "facebook is much easier" posts since the repositioning of "my topics", but spotted two in the last two days now. :|
One of them, at least, I think I can understand. Threads in the "travel companions" forum have a very natural tendency to be taken to private message swiftly. But before you can do that, you have to click a link to someone's profile, and then a button to get to the private message screen. And you have to realize that someone's profile would be the logical location for the private message function to hide (which sounds obvious to me, but apparently isn't so for everyone). It should be possible to turn that into one step by adding a link "reply via private message" to all posts in the travel companions forum. (That's the only forum for which I would add this; for regular threads you don't want to encourage the behaviour of taking things private, since forums are useful by the posts being public. But that isn't so much the case for the travel companions forum.)

I can see three reasons not to do this: 1) Limited space in the header of each post. Suggested solution: Put this link at the bottom of posts. 2) If discussion gets taken to private message earlier, then other people looking into the forum might think it's devoid of activity (while actually it's working really well). Suggested solution if this is a serious concern (I don't think it should be): Track PMs started from such a link, and if they're actually sent out, update a new counter for these posts, so you can show a "x replies via private message" line at the bottom of the thread. 3) These links would create too much clutter in the thread, which gets annoying for people who don't need them. Suggested solution: Add a profile configuration option to turn them off. (Mostly useful for the regulars, I think, though I don't know if anyone other than the moderators actually "regularly" reads travel companions threads?)

My suggestion is something along the lines of ......

Make 'Reply' at the bottom, 'Public Reply", & add another beside it as "Private reply'.

Public reply would behave as it does now.

Private reply would send a message to the Poster , without the need to go to the profile page or message page.

The thread would read 'Private message sent to ???, by ????' or somesuch

The sent message would also appear in the posters messages as sent.

Any further communication through messages would be private.

A problem with this would be needing the ability to send a private message from an individual thread. Somewhat like Quoting maybe? Might be doable, might not. Just a suggestion.

All good suggestions, thank you!

We are also looking into how the experience differs for mobile users, which I think is the issue for most of the Fb posters.
