One thing that reeeeeeeealllly p1sses me OFF!! is when someone who's sitting beside you on a plane or a train starts falling asleep on top of you. It might sound like a fairly harmless thing but it becomes so annoying. I start getting obsessed with the fact that their big drooley head is moving towards my shoulder and keep inching away until I'm nearly sitting out on the wing of the damn plane! Then I end up resoting to doing things like sneezing or coughing really loudly or banging my book shut. All that achieves is that the SleepHead in question is roused briefly before nodding off once again while I'm left looking like a lunatic who's coughing and sneezing and making lots of noise!
So far so good. Im quite tolerant of people dozing off in buses and trains, spreading their broadsheets widely or constantly getting up and down to the toilets etc. I see a fair bit of quirky habits and inconsiderate behaviour from travellers in a dorm but guessing im probably the puritan, i've had sworn off sleeping in a dorm, preferring a room to myself. U know, after travelling the whole day u just want to sleep in peace.
But still there's one thing that irks me most. Those travellers that like to play "guess-your-nationality" game...although it must be said it's totally fine if put forth as a genuine question.
I agree with Jared. But then again, that's how I've had some western girls introduce themselves to me (i.e. by trying to guess my nationality).
The last time this happened was in Thailand earlier this year. Three girls & a guy then invited me back to their beachfront resort for a swim in the pool and drinks at midnight
I'm usually very patient with people sitting beside, behind and in front of me: I'm talkative and sociable if they want to chat, quiet if they are asleep... but of course I am no angel, especially when the strangers are mentally ill or paranoid and they tend to agression and uncontrolled reactions and the conversation with them becomes unbearable; they constantly snort and sniff (Dee1979 ); they stink and the penetrating odour make me feel sick!
i once sat beside a guy on a plane who was throwing up for a while... i know he can't help it or anything, but he could of at least gone to the bathroom or SOMETHING!! just by sitting next to him, it was making me want to be sick!!
also, when i stay in youth hostels (in dorm rooms), i dont mind if people wake up early and pack their bags and luggage or whatnot... that's not the part that bothers me (cuz i can sleep thru that)... its plastic bags... if they are rustling or being moved around constantly, then that really irritates me... i dunno, anything except plastic bags!!
Out side of screaming children with oblivious parents, I'm a pretty tolerant person. Almost everything mentioned here (involving plane passengers) has bugged me at one time or another. But when you are packed in like sardines in a can - something is going to be annoying - especially on long flights.
I have found a solution that works for me... I want a window seat with Mr. Isa sitting in the next seat. That is my buffer zone between the rest of the passengers and me. Obnoxious passengers are usually obnoxious people at home. Maybe we should feel sorry for the one who have to live with them. Then again... Maybe not.
I think I'm pretty tolerant too although there is one thing that sometimes irritates me and thats when people have walkmans/ipods/mp3's turned up really loud so there's this constant buzz, especially when their music is rubbish!
travellers who seem intent on outdoing everyone else around them, like it makes them more of a traveller to have spent $1 less than you or to have got more ill than you did etc ect.
also people who are trying to speak to someone who isn't fluent in English, so they SPEAK VERY LOUDLY AND SLOWLY TO MAKE THEMSELVES CLEAR. They're not deaf after all!!!
The tin-tin noise coming from peoples headphones is another bug-bear too.
This is something that always bugs me, but it is worse when i'm travelling, i.e lugging the oversized back pack through a crowded space, running late for train/bus/plane - people who suddenly and for no apparent reason stop dead right in front of you. Possibly to talk to the 4 other people they are with, who also stop, completely blocking the path to where you need to go.
These people are oblivious to 'excuse me', to people trying to edge past them, and sometimes even those trying to push between them. And with the weight of everything i own behind me, they are hard to dodge- sometimes there is no choice but to crash right into them. Terribly sorry, but GET OUT OF MY WAY!!!
My pet peeve is people who never seem to leave home behind - the folks who complain loudly while they're travelling, about the place they're visiting. They're just talking to their friends, but the entire room (or the entire hotel lobby or train car) can hear them.
It annoys me that they aren't showing any respect for the place they're in. It's like visiting someone's home and then being rude because it's not identical to yours.
