Interesting how we all have different models of how we use the board, and get annoyed by things being too pushy with asking for attention, even if we have different ideas of what "too pushy" is and what we do want to see.
For me, since I read everything, the green 'alert' (x new replies) goes away swiftly enough; almost always before the next time I reload the main forum page. And when I just do a swift check "what's new?" I find the green alert extremely helpful for immediately directing my attention to the most important threads. But for Steve, if it's a thread he's not interested in, it will never go away until it drops off at the end; and it'll keep shouting for attention all the way. I totally get how that's annoying, and might actually encourage him not to reply to threads, since they'll then show up in that box.

Steve: Do you actually ever use the links to threads in that section? Or would you be just as happy if you can turn off the box entirely?

Sounds like you're almost referring to what happens on facebook, where subscribed threads (i.e. posts you've either initiated or replied to) show up on the page you go to when you log in. They update in (almost) real time rather than needing to reload the page.

To me, that'd be a natural "next step" for that section, and a welcome (though minor) improvement.

I do, but only to get rid of the irritation. I don't need that section at all. If I would ever want to see a thread I have posted in I go to 'Your Subscriptions in the Travel Forums'.. but the statistics in there is not in the least bit useful. Perhaps the aggravating green box could go in here.

Mostly ( besides the actual forums ) I would use the 'All the threads you're subscribed to', as this holds threads I am have an interested in & the stats are a bit more useful.

Sorry for the delayed response here and thanks for all the suggestions. I can see all the varying points of view and it actually seems pretty hard to resolve without requiring a new preference page where people can choose what they want to see. Those can be useful for power-users, but generally are pretty pointless for the majority of users.

I do tend to agree with Steve that showing subscribed threads is probably more of a majority-pleasing scenario. But then maybe there needs to be an option to replace that with a list of all threads you've posted in.

Anyway, thanks for the useful feedback.

One last point, relevant for what should be the default if this indeed becomes configurable: The reason I originally proposed for that box to be moved up the page, was for the segment of new members who post a few times, and later have trouble finding back those threads. Do you know (should be queryable, I think) what percentage of those people subscribe to all the threads they post in? Starting a thread definitely has a default checked subscribe, but does the same go for posting in it? And if so, how many new members turn that option off within their first few visits?
Afaic, if that percentage of new members subscribed to everything they've posted in is high, then subscribed would be a good default, if not, then not.
