Good to see I'm not the only one arriving with a 1 way ticket, at least it keeps things flexible. You never know how things will pan out!

Yeah definitely! I just wanted to take it as it comes and see what happens :) when abouts are you heading over?

Very shortly actually, after having handed in my notice and booked everything at the beginning of April I'll be on the plane on the way over from the 18th of June to Perth. It's amazing how quick it's coming around.

How about yourself?

Great 2 see all the replys. I am leaving the UK on 15/12 arriving in Sydney and was just planning on booking the same hostal 4 a few weeks 2 get me settled and then I know I have somewhere 2 stay over xmas & new yr. Getting worried as I have heard u should book up early if staying in Sydney over that period 2 make sure u get somewhere decent. Any1 else heard this ?

Hi Nicola,

I have heard that too but don't be too worried right now. There does still appear to be quite a few hostels with accommodation available over the Christmas and New Year Period.

One of those is Wake Up! which many of my friends have stayed at in the past and recommended to me for when I'm in Sydney in January.

Seeing as you know your arrival date it is probably worth booking your hostel sooner rather than later especially as you should only need to pay a deposit to secure it.

Thanks Gordo85. I was having a look today at hostals and there are plenty just now. Suppose am just getting a bit nervous and worried that I end up somewhere that I really dont like but if I have paid to stay there. Have you heard where is the best place 2 stay in Sydney? Ive had a look but seems theres a few placed ppl suggest, again worried as I am a female solo traveller that I end up booking myself into a bad area. I should really Stop worrying shouldnt I? Haha

You are welcome Nicola :)

Wake Up! was recommended to me and it seems to be a great place if you want to party. I believe there are three YHA Hostels in Sydney, I'm staying at the YHA in Brisbane which had a good write up and feedback. On this forum I have seen a lot of people talk about Base so I'm guessing it is a good place to stay.

I can't say I have got round to doing my research on Sydney just yet, hoping to do it this week but I can't say as I have heard of any bad areas of Sydney as yet though I'm sure they probably do exist.

There is nothing wrong with worrying, you want to have a great time and it is only natural.
I'm sure you will speak to people on here are going to be in Sydney over the festive period so you will have contacts who are close by before you leave, also at the hostel you stay at you will doubtless make friends quickly and have the time of your life.

If I look at the accommodation section here on travellerspoint, I only find 9 hostels available for an example period of 30 dec through 4 jan, most of which are way overpriced, or way out on the edges of the city, or both. Do not be complacent with booking a hostel for New Years (xmas generally isn't an issue, but NYE really is). Many places that do still have availability have very long minimum stays, which will also drive up costs. (Wake Up! has a whopping 14 nights, which I at least consider completely unreasonable.)

Quoting Gordo85

Five, at least. *looks it up* Wow, eight in the greater Sydney area. I'm always a big fan of the Glebe Point YHA, just for Glebe itself, which is one of the friendliest neighbourhoods in Sydney.
Base tends to be more a party-oriented hostel. Great if that's what you're looking for, but something to be aware of.
