My boyfriend and I are taking a 6 week trip to Central America in November -December this year. We are flying into Cancun, but haven't decided where we will fly out of yet. Coming from Canada, we've done lots of traveling together in the past (Asia, Australia, Europe) but this is our first time in Central America. Our biggest interests are beaches, diving, snorkeling, and the Mayan Ruins. We are also adventure seekers - so white water rafting, ziplining, etc are always up on our list!
Our budget is approx $2500-$3000 for the both of us. We dont mind hostels or low budget accommodations - we prefer to spend on experiences not luxury! We have the first bit of our trip decided, but we are unsure if it sounds reasonably, and also unsure about how to spend the last two weeks of our trip. Any advice, help, would be very much appreciated!
Our trip so far:
DTW to Cancun, Cancun to Isla Mujeres – 3 days
Isla Mujeres to Playa to Cozumel – 3 days
Cozumel to Playa to Tulum – 2 days
Tulum to Tikal – via Chetumal, Belize City, Flores. – 1 day travel
Tikal – 4 days
Tikal to Bay Islands via San Pedro – 2 days travel
Bay Islands – 12 days (1 week on each island Roatan and Utila) – will be diving here
Travel back to La Ceiba – 1 day
Whitewater rafting La Ceiba - 1 day ** Is this worth it? What is the rafting like here?*
Total so far: 29 days. Approx 15 days left.
We have a pretty open timeline, the budget is our only constraint. We are thinking either book it down to Costa Rica and spend two weeks there, or taking it leisurely and spending more time in Honduras and Nicaragua. OR Spend more time in Honduras and explore El Salvador. HELP! Which is better?
