Hi there - I'm travelling through SE Asia for a couple months in April and besides Laos and Cambodia I wanted to see Ko Chang. I keep reading more and more that it is becoming resort-like and I want to avoid that if possible. I am not after the 'no foreigners' location, merely a chilled out relaxed beach that has a decent amt of travellers. I visited Perhentien in Malaysia last year and was looking for something in the same vein.
Cheers - Jamil
Koh Chang was lovely and quiet a few years back. It's a beautiful island. Roughly 2 years ago a road all around the island was completed, since then an airport has opened in Trat. The Thai Prime Minister Thaksin has already said he wants it to be the next Phuket. How long that is going to take to happen is anyones guess but obviously its on the way to being a resort. It's still much quieter than the likes of Samui and Phuket, plus has some islands nearby you can explore that are prettry remote. When i last went about 18 months ago it was still pretty quiet and not too built up.
Thanks for that Dave. I guess many of the islands are not going to free from some form of industrialization. At any rate, cant hurt to explore it. Cheers
