Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Brief travel plans - starting point Cairns Oct?

Hello all,

Reading this forum has been a very interesting read and been thinking of doing a year long visa in Australia.

Background info;
I'm 21, been working in IT since I left school at 18, had a few years experience and now I want to do something fun/exciting. So I thought I would travel/work in Australia with a year Visa (subclass 417). Who knows, maybe New Zealand also..

Looking at going with a friend, but not too sure if he's really keen at the moment.... looking at going in October time, start at Cairns and work my way down the east coast and end up in Melbourne hopefully by March for the F1 race.

Quick questions:
- I'm going to work for 3 months ( not partically looking for an IT job more farm work etc) , looking at doing some WWOOFING also, recommended? With this Visa, would I be able to work one month at a time at different times so I can fit the F1 race in? say,, 1 month in Cairns, 1 month in Sydney and month elsewhere to qualify?
- I'll be taking around £5000 with me (enough to live on and flight back (when I decide to book one) I reckon?)
- weather wise, doesn't look too unbearable? I want to go to the Ayers rock but that's very hot I heard and kinda out the way of the route I want to take..?
- best way to travel? I think either train or bus? Which is the best/cost effective?

Thanks for info/help

Sure, as long as you can find an employer that only wants to hire a new worker for a month. Saying that, possibly you were referring to one month of WWOOFing? And in that case, yes, many WWOOFing jobs don't last longer than that.

Very true, although this will depend on where you are and when. Depending on when you leave Cairns, you might completely miss the wet season.

Uluru is not nearby unfortunately. For some context, check the map here – Uluru is near where Alice Springs is and Brisbane to Melbourne is more than 300km further than Land's End to John o' Groats.

Bus is likely to be cheaper but train is a little quicker.

Good luck with your trip planning!

Hello
This sounds a little like my plans...
I fly from Heathrow to Cairns on 6th October and arrive on the 8th. Im looking to stay and travel around there for awhile, going to the reef etc.. then travelling down the coast in maybe a camper van. Im staying in Sydney for xmas and new year then maybe look for a job and an apartment if possible. If I were you I would book your xmas and new yeat hostel as they go pretty quick. Im looking to take 4500-5000 but with my WHV I want to try fruit picking or bar work maybe.
Hope this is kind of useful! X

@Kelliebarnes,
Thank you for your information!
Great to hear about the WOOFing, I think i'd much prefer to work for one month in a location and then see that area for a few weeks and then another month somewhere else... thanks again

@Charlottejr,
Hello :), yeh very similar indeed, I'm also looking to go Sydney for NYE. Yes, I've had enough of the boring 9-5 office work and want to do something in the outdoors, fruit picking doesn't sound that bad! Nice to see someone with same plans, and I'm not too unrealistic in that route ha
