"MAKE EVERY MOTHER AND CHILD COUNT" is the slogan for World Health Day 2005

Today around the globe, hundreds of organizations will host events to help raise awareness of the unacceptable level of illness, suffering and death among mothers and children, and to stimulate collective responsibility and action to ensure life and good health among these precious members of society.

30 000 kids up to age of 5 die every day from hunger and malnutrition and another 20 000 humans above age of 5 (I would assume majority of them females).

That's when food is produced not to feed but for sale. No money, no profit - no food.

I think this is something that really needs to be given more awareness. It's terrible to think that every few days basically there are as many deaths from this (preventable) as there are from say the tsunami in December....

If ALL food on the planet were equally distributed, everyone would be malnourished. The sad fact is, there is not enough for everyone...and the population only goes up.....

A 'fight poverty' advertisement has just hit the screens in the UK. Basically a few celebs are chatting about poverty and every 6 seconds they click their finger which indicates another child in the world has just died of starvation!!

A few of our clients are international non-profit organizations, and we had a touchy time trying to explain to their donors that the tsunami was devastating and terrible event, yet as many people die every day from preventable diseases, as Sam mentioned.

It's hard to draw attention to an ongoing problem that isn't "glamorous", for lack of a better word. It's like trying to explain to people that as many people die of AIDS in Africa every day as were killed in the World Trade Centre terrorist attack.

it's estimated that earth (even with the current agricultural technologies) can feed up to 20 bln humans, Ukraine alone can feed the whole Europe.

the problem is that that if there is no profit in groving grains or vegetables (or making medicines) they are simply not produced.

Devision on over-indulged north and starving south is a result of colonisation and exploitation of natural resources including introduction of mono-crop agriculture of luxury (not essential) plants like tea, coffee and tabacco and plants for industry.

The EU and the US both import considerably more than they export - the sheer economic clout of the big states means they can bully and force other states into letting them have their way.

I was saying that food grown NOW...would not sustain the earth. Yes prehaps if every available plot of land were used to cultivate..golf courses, back yards...etc...then maybe, just maybe it could feed all..but I don't see that happening any time soon.

cupcake - present areble area is able to support 20 bln human population. That will inrease in the future with an advent of new techniques, mashinery and new crops

Arable=means fit for cultivation...it doesn't mean EVERY available piece of land is being used for farming. It isn't. That was my point. The land that is being used THIS moment for food, is NOT enough to feed the planet.

Amount of grains produced in the world which are consumed by livestock - 80 per cent...
Amount of grains produced which are consumed by human beings - 10 per cent...
Amount used in industrial processes - 10 per cent...
Cattle return 1 gram of protein for every 50-100 grams of protein they consume...

My information comes from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the United States Department of Agriculture
