Hello,

I'm moving to Melbourne in November with plans to work for a few months before heading off and travelling along the coast.

I'm looking for flat shares, I'm hoping to get a job in CBD so was wondering which areas are best to look at? (Access to public transport/ not too exspenive etc)

Living in London no where near a beach, I do want to be near the coast if possible.

St kilda is the area I'm mainly looking at but if anyone has any other ideas please let me know .

Any advise is much appreciated :)

I far prefer the northern suburbs of Melbourne to St. Kilda - They're funky and lively and green, and had - in my mind - a much shorter commute (though looking at a map, I think it's only marginally so), so that'd be my recommendation: North Melbourne, Carlton, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick, Northcote. (For Brunswick and Northcote, you want to be close to the train stations; the others are close by enough that you can take either train or tram.)

Ah that sounds great .. Just been googling north melbourne it's not that far from the beach either.

I've seen loads of post about the travel and tram exspenses is it best to sort that out when you get over there.
Are the trams easy to get around on or do you think getting a car may be a better idea ?

Definitely don't get a car for getting around Melbourne. Parking is a disaster, plus you'll constantly be waiting for the trams. The whole public transport setup is very good. They do have a stupid electronic prepaid travel card system nowadays, but once you've learned to deal with that, it's by far the best and swiftest way to get around town. (I personally have a slight preference for the trains over the trams - but then, I stayed in Brunswick myself, so the train to CBD was way faster.)

Hi Megan,

I've just got back from Australia having been there 9 months. I've come back for my sisters wedding but intend to travel back to Melbourne mid August/September and I too will be in Melbourne and I'm desperately looking for a house share!

Have you been looking on Gum Tree?
