Up the Mekong.

I'm planning a trip around the Gulf of Thailand. Starting at Ho Chi Minh. Travelling up the Mekong to Siem Reap. From there across to Bangkok. Then down through Malaysia into Singapore.

I've read many accounts of people going from Bangkok to Cambodia, then down the Mekong river. But non of people going the other way.

Is it easy to get a boat from Ho Chi Minh to Siem Reap?

How easy is it to get into Cambodia. Can I get a Visa in Ho Chi Minh, or Singapore (Singapore is my first point of call in SEA, I fly from there to Ho Chi Minh)?

What's the best way to get from Siem Reap to Bangkok?

Is there any reason everybody who does this trip seems to go from Down the river rather than up it?

Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Lex.

I think most people go the other way because they generally start SEA in Bangkok and work there way east or south. I know there is a boat route from HCMC to Phnom Penh, you'll probably have to get on a different boat there to go up to Siem Reap. Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is about 5 hours i think.

From Siem Reap to Bangkok you can either fly or go overland. It only takes an hour so to fly (maybe less, Bangkok to Phnom Penh took 50 mintues and cost me roughly £50 for a single, can't see Siem Reap being much different.) Not sure how long the overland route takes or the costs involved, i'm sure you can find the info on previous threads).

I will probably be doing the same journey at the end of June as i might be going form HCMC to Bangkok to catch a flight to the UK.

4)Bus and boat are the best,"quickest" and "cheapest" way to get around Asia and see the sites and meet follow travellers and locals who will all chip in and give advice?? and directions?? the night!! before!!!and never book more than 1 night at a time as who knows where you will be manyanna???

You can get Cambodia visa in HCMC very easily, next day service. We did a three day trip from HCMC up the Mekong Delta to Phnom Pehn I think it was something like $35, there is also a two option. As I remembered that the boat trip from Phnom Pehn to Siem Reap gets abit pricey, but don't know about boats to Thailand.

I'm just guessing here...travel down river is quite leisurely. So I imagine up river may be even slower...could that be a reason?
