I'm taking mine too, it helps, supplements my laptop. But still, a PC will always be a lot better, so I wouldn't give it up.

Oh, and also the camera on it is pretty useful for snapping quick photos.

Sure, it's possible traveling without your smartphone, but I can't imagine why would anybody do it. It's so helpful with everything you need traveling - camera, maps, places to eat, info about locations, booking hotels and flights, and so much more. It's your personal travel guide in your pocket- so definitely YES. Here a very partial list of some cool and useful apps for traveling : FlightTrack.
