I'm due to book my flight from Bangkok to Australia to start my 1 year working/holiday visa!
Having done some research and spoken to a lot of people, I have decided I would prefer to stay clear of the traditional East Coast route. I'm 27 and definitely enjoying socialising with other backpackers, but SE Asia has taught me that I'm not necessarily interested in partying 24/7 and like to be away from the tourists off the beaten path (a bit!).
The traditional East Coast seems a bit too touristy for me and as I love nature I am considering starting in Alice Springs or QLD (Cairns?) where it would still be warm.
I'd really like to be somewhere where the living expenses aren't too high (a big ask in Oz, I know!) - I'm open to all work, although I've heard fruit picking is sociable this tends to involve a lot of drinking. I think I am just a bit over getting drunk, so I am not so sure about working on a farm if that's what people do for fun. Correct me if I am wrong, though!
Can anyone give me advice on where I might want to start my trip first? I'd be looking at Melobourne/Tas in Dec when it's a bit warmer
I am interested in the following places:
Great Barrier Reef
I am not sure whether heading to AS is the best plan, as I would have to go East to get to the Reef and then go back on myself to get to Broome or Perth.
Does anyone have any advice? Is AS too crazy to live there for 2-3 months? Is it possible to save there?
