Hi Sam

I posted this as a reply in an Off Topic forum, but later realized it would probably be appropriate in System Talk.

You have mentioned that "... it's generally not accepted to publish birthdates online for various privacy reasons.... Then again, it could be optional perhaps...."

I've wondered why it is compulsory to enter date of birth / age in the TP profile.

Cheers
Wocca

Isn't it just to keep track of your age? So that if I, Evelyn, join in 2005 and enter my age as 26, I am not still 26 two years later.

I dont see any problem with it. No-one has access to your birth date.

Fair comment, E I'm not saying there's a problem.

Other travel sites don't seem to advertise the age of members. I just wonder why TP does.

Quoting Sam I Am

The issue is that the birthday date is one of the two things needed to retrieve a lost password so if someone was really sneaky, including this would leave them with only one thing needed to retrieve someone's log in details and enter the site and delete things....

Sorry Wocca, phrased myself awkwardly there - wasnt implying that you specifically had a problem with.

(pauses to extract foot from mouth)

Good old Hien!

Thanks for the underline, Hien

Now, how come the member's age gets published?

Good old Hien!

I'm more specifically wondering about the privacy aspect

I didnt even realize I had entered my birth date...duh!...but then again how would TP know my age?...double duh!
I guess if people want to keep that private, they would just have to lie about the birth date so it would show age 0, 1 or 100. I have seen that in some members...

That's not a very discreet method for someone to protect his / her privacy. In fact. it just draws attention to the person's incorrect age

I must admit...it did draw attention to me when I saw those ages .
