Anyone care to venture a guess as to the Nationality of the new Pope?

My guess is they will go with an Italian this time.

Do you already know who the main candidates are?

Your guess is as good as mine! I thought they only has 114 to choose from??

Two hundred and seventeen popes have been Italian. By contrast, 17 have been French, 6 German, and 3 Spanish. England, Portugal, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Poland each yielded one pope. The African continent has produced three pontiffs. The last of them, Gelasius I, took office in 492.

Electing a non-Italian pope would break a long-held tradition of the church. John Paul II was the first non-Italian pontiff to be elected since 1523.

The church's voting blocs, however, don't necessarily divide along geographic lines. Cardinals of liberal and conservative persuasions can be found on all continents.

"There are several scenarios," Gillis said. "One is that, after having a Polish pope for 27 years, the cardinals want to return to one of their own and elect an Italian. Another would be that the pope would be a figure from the developing world. The other scenario is that they'll choose a European who can revive moribund Christianity in Europe?or try to, anyway."

father Dougal is from Ireland - despite bookies offering only 1000/1 a week ago.

He is probably the most popular priest in Ireland and the UK and many parts of the world and if not this bloody vatican mafia running banko vaticano he for sure would become a new pope.

They actually have millions to choose from. Any man that's been baptized is eligible to become pope. However, everyone knows it will be one of the Cardinals. As Cupcake points out it will most likely be an Itailian. The Nigerian Cardinal could be the first from Africa (the fastest growing sector of the Catholic Church). There's a "rising star" from Hondorus if they decide to choose one from Latin America he would be the favorite (more Catholics are from Latin America than anywhere else in the World).

There were three African Popes who came from the region of North Africa. The names of the Three African Popes are: Victor (183-203 A.D.), Gelasius (492-496 A.D.), and Mechiades or Militiades (311-314 A.D.). All are saints.
