Hi Everyone

I've done two NYE in Sydney, currently in Wellington at the moment but I am returning for the NYE trip

I actually organised a Travellers Point meet up two years ago just a few days before NYE we did it through facebook and did it at Side bar (wakeup hostel). Awesome night! And made some cracking friends.

Does anyone have any firm plans for NYE yet?
Im not actually in a hostel this year, at a friends for the week but if anyone does the ticket event I am up for one.

As I've done it il give you all some tips.

Hostels

Book now availability gets very limited. Some of the hostels will release beds again a few weeks before but usually they are min 10/14 nights and only if they have not hold back.

Wake Up
Great hostel, centrally located next to Central Station, it's a big hostel, staff are good and rooms cleaned every day. Great bar under neath called side bar. Will probably be already full wake up hostel but.may release beds again

Base
Another good hostel has scary canary bar under neath, never stayed here tho but told it's good.

Yha rocks
Very good hostel expensive and very. Be full if you have not already booked. Located right next to the harbour. Great sundeck. Sadly if you are a resident unless you have booked for upstairs on NYE you won't get up. TICKET event only.

Yha railway
Located next to the central station. Again really nice hostel. Good facilities and very good all round.. if you stay in the railway carriages it's very nice.

Yha central
Eh it's ok. Has some.good facilities but views. I would not stay here again.

Bounce
Located near railway station. Apparently it's one of the best. I never got to stay here I should have done!..

1890 on George
Good hostel and clean, facilities all good, plugs I think next to beds and in lockers. Which is always good!

Surfside backpackers
Located at Bondi and coogee. Great location. Owner has no respect for clients. I would never stay there again.

Don't know kings cross as would never stay there. Dont like the area in the day let alone at night. I've heard so mixed reviews both about the area and the hostels.

As for NYE

You need to think about what you want to do.

There are plenty of events which are ticketed, many giving you great viewing points for the fireworks (that's if you want to see that). If you do, then you have three options.

1) ticket event
Plenty of them around, from cruise/ship runs around the harbour god thing is you have all day to do stuff, go for a meal have a drink etc then just turn up.

There is quite a good viewing areas, opera house, Luna park (one i went to first time - very good). Clubs and pubs with viewing points.. but tickets sell fast for all these.

Luna park is probably one that does not but you may not be able to get them close to the date.

2nd
Maquarie chair and botanical gardens, near the opera house etc, also darling harbour.

You can watch fireworks from these but you have to be there very early it's literally picnic day from 9AM when the gates open. I can't remember if you can take alcohol in or not.

3) turn up in the evening and just see where you can squeeze in. Good luck with that!

Where ever you go you will have an awesome time. And if your in hostels as long as you interact with your room mates and people you will do fine.

Try to think about Christmas as its something very differerent this side of the world and be open minded.

Hi everyone

I noticed this was quite a big post so unsure if I've left it abit late :( im planning on going to Sydney in December preferably around the beginning as it is cheaper :) I'm 25 and on my own and sooooooo nervous about going. My friend went out there 4 Years ago and I'm staying with her and her boyfriend over Xmas and New yr then getting chucked out ;) ill be going to stay in a hostel alone but unsure where yet. Would love to make friends before I go. Scared of flying too which doesn't help is anyone going around the same time from the uk?

Kim x

Hi Kim!

I'm in a similar position, my friend lives and works in Sydney with his company. I've booked to go out there for a few weeks in December and arrive on 7th December (flying from UK) Originally the plan was that he'd be on leave from work but he can't get it off!! So yeah I'm gonna be solo on the week days and looking for things to go and people to do them with! :)

Have you booked anything yet? :)
