Jobs4travellers is offering to set up a bank account and TFN for you, for a price of 55$. The account is with Commonwealth and you get a Mastercard and 2 free intl. transfers
This includes all back account fees for 12 months, as well as membership to their site with lots of jobs etc.
Has anyone tried this, and is it worth the money? Should you just go to the bank when you get to Oz and open an account there instead?
Short story: it's not worth the money.
You can do both of those things yourself for free. I believe you can set up your account with Commonwealth online and then pick up your card when you arrive, or you could just go into a branch to open an account once you arrive. You can also apply for your TFN online once you're in Australia (ATO website). There's also loads of free job sites you could look at – try the ones here or Gumtree, Harvest Trail, etc.
Actually, it looks like ANZ bank waives the 5$ fee for 12 months of you apply online.
Thoughts on ANZ over Commonwealth?
Much of a muchness but ANZ has a friendlier reputation
