as for carrum downs its only about 35km from Melbourne, so you're able to do everything Melbourne has to offer. Make sure you catch a game of AFL (Australian Football League) at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground)- the atmosphere is electric. melbourne is a pretty good base for exploring victoria- perhaps do the great ocean road drive to adelaide, although i haven't done it myself, the scenery is meant to be spectacular.

i'm sure whatever you end up doing you'll have a great time,

True true! Wilson's Prom has been closed to tourists since the fires. When it opens there might be some views that previously couldn't be seen because of the trees!

I'm currently out near Carrum Downs - in Berwick. PM me if you want some real local info! I grew up in the area.

You will find that late spring/summer in the Prom should be spectacular this year, if we get good rainfall, due to the regenerative growth of the native fauna that will occur after the fire. Magnificent place for hiking and camping.
