Do I really need them? What are the chances of getting caught?

If you are get caught by the police, slip 250 thousand rupiah (RM8)into the police and things would be fine. Motorbike is a better choice then. Don't 'appoint' drivers as they are 'eager' on finishing up the whole itinerary. Want to get the best part in Bali, DIY plz.

My advice is to get either a International Driving License or a Tourist Driving License. Not worth the hassle to drive illegally.
The TDL can be purchased from Jl. Cokorde Agung Tresna 14, Renon. You will need to bring a copy of your passport and the driving license from your home country. Cost is Rp. 100.000 and the license is valid for 30 days. The office is open Monday - Saturday 8.00am - 3.00pm. Tel. 243939.
Otherwise for a motorcycle you can get a Temporary Permit - valid for 6 months on Bali only - a simple enough procedeure but make sure to take 3 passport size photos, your passport, and a valid driver's license to the Police station in Denpasar.
The test is fairly straight forward and the local police assist in the "too hard" questions.
Make sure you carry your license at all times when driving/riding.

Hi people,

Thanks for the replies. Apparently, I have came back from Bali and yes, we did use the motorbike and no, we did not get the licence, neither were we stopped by the police. (Cikusang: I didn't give out any kopi-O!) Having said that, we only use the motorbike at places outside Kuta whereby chances of getting stopped is much slimmer. Being Asian and really tanned, we could easily passed as the locals (except for the eye bit...). Hehe. Bali rocks!
