Sorry, another budget question...

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Sorry, another budget question...

Hi Everybody!

Okay, so this is the trip I have in mind for between 5 and 6 months:

Argentina (excluding Patagonia)
Ecuador (excluding Galapagos islands)

Is £5000 ($8000 USD) about right for that? (Flights to and from the region not included in this. The £5000 would be purely for travelling through the continent).

I would stay in hostels, and travel everywhere by bus. I'm happy to buy food from supermarkets on occasion if this is cheaper, but would rather stick to street food, budget places to eat, etc.

I would do some of the big tourist attractions (Inca Trail, Salt Flats, Iguazu falls) but not Galapagos Islands, Easter Island. I would spend time in the major cities and towns and hit a few beaches too where possible.

I'm 29 years old so I won't be out partying constantly but would certainly like to have few beers here and there along the way with fellow backpackers.

If you're wondering why Brazil isn't included it's because that country is SO big and SO expensive, I think it might warrant a separate trip by itself.

There's SO much conflicting information out there and so much of it is out of date, that it's very hard to know what's accurate in terms of costs.

Based on the information and I've provided, I would be very grateful to receive opinions of my £5000 budget idea.

Thank you so much!

Rumour has it that Argentina is a bit on the pricey side too. You will certainly find your pound goes a long way in Bolivia and Peru and Ecuador are reasonably cheap too. Enjoy South America!

6 months = 180 days so $8,000 USD = a little over $40/day for your budget.

For transport throughout South America + accommodation + meals + attractions + some beers and fun... in my opinion $40/day is not enough. It's doable of course, but it would be my version of hell. Always sleeping in dorm rooms in the crappiest hostels... never splurging for a great restaurant or the occasional nightclub blow out... watching every penny all the time... no thanks, that's my definition of a $hit holiday.

I'd suggest saving more money or cutting back on the length of the trip - but if you're super low budget and frugal then it's possible I suppose.

Have fun and good luck with your research.

PS Colombia is my favourite country in South America, you'll have a gas there. Argentina's economy is circling the toilet bowl, right now you can get over 15 pesos for $1 USD on the blue market there as opposed to barely over 5 pesos at the government rip-off rate from an ATM or bank, so bring USD for that portion of your trip.
