Hey fellow travellors!

Can anyone recommend an easy way of transportation around from Auckland to Whangarei and region around?
Is it for example easy to travel from Whangerei to Tutukaka by bus or other beach towns?

I looked on a bus company site but it only serves the bigger cities and want to know if local transportation is omni-present in other regions.

Or if renting a car is a better option, which car agencies are good and have low budget prices? (Renting in Auckland).
If people want to share a car in October 2014 I made a request in another topic: http://www.travellerspoint.com/forum.cfm?thread=102905

Hope someone can give advise!

Cheers

Apparently there are buses from Whangerei to Tutukaka in the summer but I can't find any timetables and I haven't done it myself. If you're a customer of "Dive Tutukaka" (Tutukaka's all about diving and going out to Poor Knights Islands - one of the best dive places in the world) then they have a free shuttle bus service.

If you want to hire a car from Auckland (good if there's more than one of you) then try Jucy Rentals or James Blond who are usually much cheaper than the multi-nationals.

Some people hitch-hike - that's up to you! Enjoy NZ!:)

That's exactly what I want to do :) I want to go up there for Diving. I have seen some dive agencies which I cotacted and Dive Tutukaka was one of them. However this is the most expensive one and the shuttle service is not free But I will wait for an answer of all the companies and book with the one that feels the best for me.

Thanks for the advice! I am looking into renting a car and hopefully I can share and travel with some other people with the same interests :)

Cheers

Yes, just found out that Dive! Tutukaka have now started charging for the shuttle service from Whangerei to Tutukaka - NZ$20 for a round trip which takes about half an hour each way. There's not much that's cheap in New Zealand!

It may be worth your while knowing that there's a good snorkel and dive site about half way between Auckland and Whangerei - Goat Island. You can park at the waterside and walk straight in with your snorkel or air-tanks. Obviously it's not quite as good as Poor Knights but it's a great deal cheaper (free if you have a snorkel and mask) and there are loads of fish right between the mainland and island. Google Maps "Goat Island, Leigh"

Thanks very much. The shuttle service is indeed 20 NZD (I already got a reply from them). I think I will rent a small car from juicy rental.
I will try to check out the goat island spot. Thanks for sharing it!
Although I will go diving for sure because I don't get the opportunity every day and i read it is in the top 10 dive spots of the world :)
