I apologize for not being clearer, but my intent was not to offer Cuba as an alternative, I only used it as an example (one of countless others) of what is available to her from Montreal. For a first time traveller having an option like that clearly laid out will help to put the other trip into perspective.
If Mary can stretch her time/money to make it for 2 weeks minimum then that's of course a completely different story. Only five days in Australia though? That's completely nuts. Like I said I've flown that identical route (leaving from Toronto, but same thing) many, many times and even an experienced long distance traveller like me who knows how to prepare for jet lag, etc. wouldn't do that "vacation" if it was free.
I might be able to push a second week. the question is how long my vacation could be after only one year of working at a place.
Didn't mean to sound like a total idiot. . .
You are in NO way an idiot Mary, you're just inexperienced, that's all.
My only point was to make you think about travel time and jet lag verses the actual vacation time you would have in Australia. Your original plan simply doesn't work on any logical level. Australia is too far away.
Save up enough money and vacation time to do a minimum 2 week trip then Australia makes sense.
Good luck with your planning.

Hello everyone, I was curious. I live in canada (montreal quebec more specifically) and i was planning a trip to austrailia. I was only going for a week but I can't seem to find good estimates on the flight/how much i should bring to enjoy the week. I was going to visit a friend but i doubt i'd be crashing at her place. i was thinking 3000$-4000$ (including flight/hotel) but idk if itll be enough
Can anyone offer any advice or is my amont of money just too low?
There must be many websites to get flight info. I use Flight Network myself to get an idea and then ask my Travel agent to do the booking.
A quick search there gives a price of about C$1800 leaving C$1200 - C$2200 for your week, less 2 days of travel = C$240.00 - C$440.00 per day. Plenty I think but more is always better. Booze is a big expense so if you can skip that it would help the finances.
Check any accommodation website, there are lots. Travelerspoint has one & Hotels Combined is the one I use.
Try asking a Travel agent if they can get you a package.
