I was sharing a 10 bed dorm with an en suite bathroom and one of the girls spent an hour in the washroom this morning which didn't even include a shower (I have no idea what she was doing, not sure I want to know), but couldn't help but think it was really annoying as everyone else was waiting.

Got me thinking: what are your pet peeves when sharing a dorm?

Outside of that my biggest would be:
- LOUD people (yelling, laughing & throwing stuff around) at ridiculous hours of the night

(If there's a discussion already on this- I'm sorry)

Definitely agree with noisy dorm buddies!

If getting up early I try to make the unnecessary noise before turning in for the night – zips, fussing with vacuum travel bags, lockers, etc so it's easier to slip out

I was at a hostel in the University of BC, if memory serves . The sleeping area was the floor of the gymnasium. Mid-way through the night I woke up having a screaming nightmare. I must have ticked off 200 & some people.

I have done the same thing sharing a cabin for 4 going to Sweden & a train carriage for 4 crossing France.

I am much better now.

I had an awful experience in 1997 when I travelled to Cambodia where I stayed in a dorm. My backpack was ransacked and my wallet and mobile phone were stolen. Since then I have a phobia of staying in a dorm. Nowadays whenever I went backpacking, my choice of accomodation would be the cheapest guesthouse/hostel or sometimes I managed to share a standard room with other travellers and we split the room rates

Steve - that's a bit different though as it's not something you could do much about. We're referring to people that can do something about it but don't.

For example: I had a group of girls come into a hostel yelling drunk and throwing things one night. I literally heard something hit the wall less than a foot from my head. When one of the guys told them to shut up, they got louder and told him it was just what happened when you put Italian guys in the same room as French women. This was around 5 am.

I imagine finding someones false teeth in the sink might be up there as a peeve. Not that I would ever do that mind!
