Hi All

I am going for a 3-4 week holiday to Australia and I am trying to work out the best way to take funds with me. I just wondered if anyone had used a Travelex card in Australia and if you thought it was any good. For those have have had one, hopefully you can help me out with some questions I have as I can't seem to find the answers on the website ....

Can you use the card in any shops or will it just be a case of using it to get cash from the cash point?
Travelex say that they don't charge, but does anyone know if the shops/cash points charge a fee every time the card is used?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dani

Hi Dani,

I used Travelex on my last trip to Europe and was able to use it everywhere without a problem. The same will be true in reverse; you can use it at ATMs and anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

Australian ATMs normally charge a flat $2 if you use an ATM operated by someone other than your bank, so with an international cash card that is likely to be all ATMs for you. My tactic to cut down on fees when I was in Europe was to select 'credit' for most purchases in store and infrequently take out a 100 or so in cash to cover me for a week of small purchases – transport, snacks, etc. This would be a good idea in Australia also as merchants don't charge extra for using Mastercard credit or debit cards.

I also presume you are referring to Travelex's Single Currency Cash Passport. This is taken from their website:

Secure

Chip and PIN protected
24/7 Global Emergency Assistance service with free replacement funds up to the available balance on the card
Not linked to your personal bank account

Convenient

Accepted at over 32 million merchants and ATMs worldwide
Preloaded with the available currency of your choice
Reloaded easily by phone, through your online banking or in store
Free low balance SMS alerts

Budget-friendly

Free ATM withdrawals*
Lock in your exchange rate in advance, each time you load or re-load
Keep on track with the online balance checker

  • Some ATM operators may charge a withdrawal fee or set their own withdrawal limits - however, Travelex will not charge you a withdrawal fee on ATM transactions.

Hi Dani, I would reccomenr Caxton FX world traveller card personally, It doesnt charge for taking money out in ATM's and take only a small percentage of the money you top up. Google them for more info

Theres also Fairfx as an alternative
