Working holiday! Where to live!?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Working holiday! Where to live!?

I am going on a working holiday for a year to Australia, I have never been before. I want to live on the east coast but need help on knowing where is nice to live... also fairly cheap in terms of renting somewhere... there would be 4 of us sharing a house all under 25 so do like nights out.

Ideally we would like to be:
- Near the beach
- Town where there will be restaurants, Bars, Nightclubs (for recreational and work purposes)
- Near nice shops
- Busy town areas (not silly busy but at least an atmosphere)
- Nice houses/apartments to rent but not mega money

Just basically a nice town to live in not overly expensive rent and lots to do most of the time!
Can anyone suggest places for us to research that would be Great!

Thanks in advance!!:)

Hey mate,

I lived in Brisbane for a few years and I can't recommend it more. Great weather, awesome city, amazing beaches 1.5 hours north and south of the city and great restaurants. If you are looking at living closer to the beach, you could try the Sunshine coast north of Brisbane, it has amazing beaches but is also pretty quite. Then there's the Gold coast south of Brisbane, good beaches, great surfing and busy night life. Also lots of touristy stuff available.

Further up north you have cairns, haven't been there personally but have heard good things. You could also look at somewhere in Sydney around manly or Bondi. The cost of these places will vary and anything near the water isn't going to be cheap, you'll just have to shop around and find a good deal. However with the 4 of you splitting the cost you should be fine.

Great city with beaches within driving distance - Brisbane
Beach/Party Vibe - Gold Coast
Beach/Chilled Vibe - Sunshine Coast and Cairns
Beach/Big City - Manly/Bondi in Sydney

Good luck,

Daniel John

I'm going to suggest somewhere like Newcastle or Port Macquarie, mainly because rent in many of the big coastal cities is expensive—especially Sydney—but also because you said 'town'. There are plenty of great towns with better beaches than the big city all up the east coast. Start somewhere like and use the Destinations tab to explore the north or south coast.

Hi Danny,

I live in the outer suburbs of sydney so know the city and surrounds well. I suggest a place an 45 mins to an hour south of Sydney called Wollongong. It's beachside, much cheaper than any Sydney beach suburb, it is a main city but not crazy busy. That is where many of my friends/family who are in their 20's are settling due to convenience, location, surf and cost.
Check it out on a map.

A good base for budgeting your non-working life in is to look up hostel bed rates, and then double that to find a cheap food and accommodation rate for when you don’t have an apartment or job.
