Hi there, can anyone help on the CHina train system. A little confused over too much readings from guidebooks.

I am travelling from BEijing to Urumqi in eraly May, if i buy a ticket, can i stop over in cities such as Xian and DunHuang? What is the validity of my ticket?

Any recommendations which class to take? HArd seats or sleepers?

Thanks all for your help!

Hi Calvin, you won't be able to stop over in cities for one ticket to Urumqi because there are few tickets you can actually use in China extending the period of time for which the tickets are issued. So if you want to stop anywhere in the middle site-seeing, buy those tickets first , and when you get there, buy the tickets for the next stop.

Also definitely take sleepers if the duration is longer than one nite. Trains can be pretty crowded at times. Sleeping through it is the best strategy! you don't want to get to your destination and feel like crushing onto bed to sleep 3 days straight!! ;)

Agree with lurker. Train system is quite convenient in China, reaching almost everywhere. But don`t go during the Golden Week(the first week of May).

Do have a good look at those Xinjiang minority girls! They are famous for their beauty. I saw some Xinjiang tourists in the Summer Palace last weekend. The girls are so lovely!! But their father is far from being a handsome man.

Oh they sleeper trains are a nightmare if your alone and on the top bunk!

That bloody bird song thing blasting out of the speaker that's 4inches from your head! I woke up with a start, smashed my head on the ceiling that was a foot from my head and fell off landing on some guy who seemed imperviase to the fact that i'd just fell on him!

Apart from that they're good fun.

The last sleeper train trip I took, I chose the top bunk because you don't have any one climbing up past you. Unlike the lower & middle bunks. I didn't notice the 6am bird song. That may have been played while I was washing my face and cleaning my teeth. The train pulled into the destination station at 7am anyhow

Heh, I'll be taking the same trip at about the same time. So if you see a couple of bemused- and lost-looking white faces about a foot above all the locals' heads, wave out. That'll be me and my mate =P

The bloody bird song can actually be turned off if you notice a button by the side of the first window. I was driven crazy when they played those strange sharp music and had to ask the train service to turn it off.
