Me and my travel buddy were thinking of hiring a camper van/car and drive this long distance over the course of a month or so...i think it will take a while.
Does anyone know what there is to do between Perth and Darwin? If its not alot then we'll fly.
admittedly not much, if you go the most direct route once you get out a few hours from perth the towns are few and far between. also driving in the australian desert is dangerous- make sure you have plentiful petrol and water. two people just died in the desert for abandoning their vehicle and attempting to walk to safety. a big no no in the outback!! if you take the coastal route (if possible) it may be more interesting, but will take much longer. flying may well be a cheaper and better option, but i'd love to hear other peoples opinion!
It's a long thirsty journey through the outback. Do it once, and then you'll want to fly next time!
Do a bit of research on Shark Bay, Monkey Mia with the Dolphins, the Bungle Bungles, Broome etc. Apparantley there is loads. I'm hoping to see that part of the country in the next few months and can't wait. I also met a French guy who despite being a little bit tunnel-visioned, (he said he'd seen ALL of Australia in two & a half months) did say that the WA coast going down to Perth from the north is unreal! Plus if you drive it you'll get a much better feel for just how far from anywhere Darwin actually is!
Maybe you could consider just flying Broome to Darwin
