Travel Forums Europe Spanish Visa Question!? Please Help!

Dear fellow travelers,

I would really appreciate your help on this issue!! I am an United States citizen, currently studying in Spain for the year and was issued a long-stay visa before arriving in September 2014. I have been traveling throughout Europe since that date but only within the Schengen Zone of Europe. This last weekend I traveled to the UK and was stopped at customs and was told that my visa had expired already! I was completely shocked! My university back home did absolutely nothing to help with the student visa application process and from what I had read and was told through the Spanish Consulate I was good to go for my studies here. Luckily I was let into the UK after some questioning and the Spanish border said nothing upon my return to Madrid, but I am once again traveling out of the Schengen Zone to Ireland in March and am terrified about what will happen going through customs! Does anyone know of what step I should take or what to do in this situation?!!? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

Thank you so much!! :)

It is not clear from what you say, but whatever duration this visa and presuming it is solely for study in Spain - that is what it is for. It does not give you the right to roam around Europe for the duration of that visa. You are bound by the same Schengen rules as anyone else from the U.S., i.e. you are allowed 90 days within 180 travel within the rest of the Schengen area.
My interpretation only and this is no place to find proper answers. You should contact your embassy or not travel outside Spain until your return to the states.
