Hi everyone ... to put you in the picture, I have a burning desire to travel, backpack off to somewhere, but im scared. Im 36 yo female whos looking for some adventure, and wanna be able to just get off on my own.

I have never travelled alone, never stayed in a hostel, i dont even own a backpack.

Please, please, please can you tell me where to start. What kind of rucksack do i need, how big should it be, what should it have in it, do i need camping stuff, do i need walkin boots, rain coat .. i just haven't got a clue, i never even camped out as a child!!!

Wot is your top 10 list of backpack items??

Let's see . . . if I could help,

in my pack, I would put a walkman, a camera, my headphones . . .. my journal and thinpens from Germany:

1. clothes and shoes
2. duct tape
3. photocopies of important stuff
4. healing ailments, like Rx's and Rx Drugs
5. looped lid (plastic) water bottle (you could hook it on the back with a caribeener)
6. bandanas and a sarrong
7. most-needed cosmetics in a front pocket, to be reached quickly
8. extra currency hidden
9. surgical cord that's braided for hanging up laundry (in a hostel)
10. a universal sink stopper

That isn't in order!but hopefully that helps

I wish you Good luck.

-Stephanie :)

Some garlic to keep the vampires away, a pitchfork, some calamine lotion and Burneze, and some self-defence skills.

If you are single, have no children, have no mortgage, dont care losing your butt on the sale of your car and you are in the middle of an early mid life crisis...heck yeah!!!

oh monkee-you sooooOOOOOOooooo sound like me-just about everyone on here has gone throguh the painful steps with me of actually umming and arr-ing, and i have finally booked my ticket! i'ts kinda sinking in...slowly-it gives you a sense of freedom! i'm well nervous-well-anxious and of course excited!

I am exactly the same as you-prob worse off-i have never travelled at all, i have never stayed in a hostel, actually one thing is diff-i am now a proud owner of my very own 'proper' backpack!

I always though maybe i'm just dreaming this...will i ever get the courage to just do it...i think i gave everyone on here a headache about the whole thing...but one thing that i heard that has stood out is this saying...

"...it's better to regret the things that you have done than regret what you haven't..."

I think that is a great little saying, at the end of the day you only get one life...so the question is...why not?!

Good for you Jas!! That is very courageous for someone that has never ever traveled. You are still young so THIS is the time to do it. Who knows where your life will lead you while you are in the middle of your travels...just the thought of it is extremely exciting!!! How long are you going for?

It is very daunting but it's one of those things i feel i'm ready to do-well only time will tell!

This trip i will only be going for 3 weeks alone, this is just a tester to see if i like it then i will hopefully travel for as long as i fancy!

After the three weeks i will have to return to work-damn the responsibilty! lol!
