In the days when there was no internet to buy stuff we would lug heavy suitcases filled with goodies. No need to do that, travel light.

I chose a Caribee and it has been wonderful. If you are going with a 36L still consider a wheelie as it is so useful. A backpack at times and and wheeled bag at times, you can't do better.

Hey, definitely the smaller the better. Also I would recommend a backpack that that opens like a suitcase, with a wrap around zip, as opposed to one of those top loading ones. One bag that I saw a lot of people with, which I would probably buy for my next trip is this one;
http://www.vango.co.uk/gb/travel/788-freedom-6020.html#/67-color-purple
It's pretty big, but like someone else here said, it has all those compress straps so is completely flexible and can go pretty small, or big... I bought so many things whilst i was out there, presents, clothes, sarongs etc that my bag grew and grew over time... but so did my strength (and carefreeness) to carry it all ;)

Although, I should say, my last bag had a detachable day bag, and I really wasn't a fan... but you don't have to use it. you can always try and find one similar without, or just don't use it. I agree with the idea of being able to put your day bag inside your big bag. Or even separate completely. For instance, anywhere you're actually travelling, on a plane/bus/train, you won't have the day bag attached to it anyway. Probably the big back under the bus in storage and your day pack on you... so the attachable part is pointless... and the small bag (at least on my last one) was naff anyway. I'd have much rather had a 'real' smaller backpack. Or... as a female, not a back pack at all... a normal handbag!

I dunno, I guess... everyone's style of travelling and what they think is important is different. It's a trial and error thing. 6 months isn't long. So my real recommendation would be to get a second hand bag off ebay or somewhere for cheap. See how you like it. Then the next time you go travelling (when you catch the travel-bug) you can get a proper one based on your experiences and use that for the rest of your travel-life!!! haha

Good Luck!

I think you should try a good backpack through amazon or Snap deal. There you can get best deal of ethnic sports backpack. I get a deal. But I haven't saved the link of my deal. But surely you'll get a good deal there.
