I woke up this morning with a sudden desire to plan a trip in May, and discovered it may be a good time to visit Borobudur and its surrounds. I understand there may be a ceremony around Vesak Day on 23 May (Vesak commemorates the enlightenment of Buddha). Has anyone been? Will it be hard to find a place to stay? Will it be so crowded I wont be able to see the temple complex itself?
Any insights or experience would be highly appreciated.
I've been to Yogya a couple of times. There were touts on bicycle rickshaws just outside the railway stations. They will take you to available hotels. etc. I found it better to stay awy from the railway station.
I also took a train ride an hour or so to Solo. Not sure why you've mentioned Solo though. Though I must admit that there's a road-side warung called "Planet Steak" that has delicious meals. In fact, Solonese food is one of my favourite.
Borobudur is fantastic. I'd go again any day. Easy to get to from Yogya.
well I've mentioned Solo coz I can get a rather cheap flight on Silkair that goes thru Solo!
I have no travel companion coz the press have made everyone think every single volcano in Indonesia will blow up any time!!
