Anyone live in Hawaii or spend more than a few months at a time there? Wondering about places to live that aren't very tourist heavy and somewhat inexpensive. not much luck so far.

Hmmm...I I dont know that there is anything inexpensive in Hawaii, but it is a GREAT place to live. I live there for a semester in the Spring of 2002. If you have not decided on an island yet, I would suggest the Big is the most beautiful place I have ever been to. There are tons of things to do there if you like nature. Unfortunetly, since Hawaii is such a tourist hot spot the real estate in the area is outrageous. Your best bet would be to go to one of the universities and check for postings. Usually a couple of people will get together and rent a house...this can help minimize the cost. Anyway...if you need anymore help...feel free to write me a personal message. Hope this helps..

Probably too late but...what island are you considering?

In general a townhouse is around $300K and house about $300K - $400K as a starting price...

Rent on Oahu (a place that is closer than 30 min drive to the nearest store) is going to be comparable to SF/Boston/almost NYC prices....

I tried, the only thing I found for under 100,000 USD was a 500 sq.ft. tin shack!
(I can't believe it is the 3rd most expensive in the U.S. I would have figured 1st!)

try It has various links from apartments to homes for sale. Even employment. I lived in hawaii for a few months. Like Joz mentioned, its quite expensive. After all... it is an island. Everything is imported. Sometimes it's cheaper to eat out than cook at home!
