I have friends in Phnom Penh that help orphans and poor families with: food, shelter, medical, schooling, etc. No fees involved. They usually can use another pair of hands to help out. If this is something that might appeal to you, send me a PM.

Hope you enjoy a fantastic trip. I would definitely make sure that you try to find out how best to help the people you are staying with on workstay. The language differences may sometimes be a barrier but there will always be a friend or a relative that has decent English. Talk to them about what makes a difference to their lives – you may be surprised. Often people go with assumptions based on their lives and the experience is not so rewarding. Make sure you check with other travelers or through the organization itself that the NGO is legitimate and doing a good job. Don’t pay money without seeing the project and getting a good idea of what it is exactly they are doing.
