Hi Shell,

most people who visit this site have been in your position at one time or another. I went to Aus a few years ago (only for 5 weeks), but went to Sydney to see family then travelled up to Cairns on my own. Aus is a great place to go and it is so easy to meet up with other people. As you have family there you have a headstart on most as you can have a settling in period before you get out and about. Australia has lots of must sees (most of which i didn't have time to see!!!), but you should go for it while you're in a position to do it. You won't regret it. I think if you need inspiration just browse through the photo galleries on this site and you get an idea of some of the places that are out there to visit. I posted a thread early about cheap flights to Oz, get yourself on the phone and get booked up

hey shell,

i really wouldn't worry about travelling australia on your own, its a pretty friendly country and you're bound to meet people along the way that you might end up travelling with. hostels are great for this!! from melbourne you have a really good starting point to explore the eastern coast ie. melbourne-cairns, which is what a lot of first time travellers to australia do. there are numerous things to do along the way, and once you get to australia listen to other travellers and locals advice- this often proves invaluable. don't be scared.. just book your flight, and once you get here i'm sure you'll fit right in.

p.s- as for whv (working visas) it used to be only for a year in australia, but theres just been a new development- read all about it under "WHV.. this could be good news", a thread i started recently.

good luck and feel free to message me if you have any questions!!

Hi Shell

I know how you feel, i have just posted a similar thread to yours. Maybe we can encourage eachother to just get excited and go!

I too am nervous about the thought of going on my all my friends are married..having kids etc... but fortune favours the brave they say.

The fact that you have family to go and see is a real bonus, maybe we should both stop worrying and just grab this with a smile (even if its a nervous one!) I will....if you will...

hey moni

Good to hear from you...ive read your thread and reckon you should bit the bullet and just do it!
Just think of the amazing time your gonna have... places your gonna see and people your gonna meet! The stories you can tell your grankids!! Hey Im doing a good job of even convincing myself here!
If im honest, its taken me a while to get to this stage though...Ive been going round in circles for the past 6 months, what about my job, what will I do with my flat, Im getting too old (haha mid-life crisis at 28!!), will I be ok on my own.....but I also know if I dont do in now, I never will and I know I'll regret it!
Im sure you'll make the right decision for you....
feel free to send me a message and maybe we could chat ideas and give each other the encouragement we deserve!

Hi Shell.. thanks for responding.

Well, you are never too old to have fun are you?!! I am sooo the same as you..been going round in circles too, thinking i should just settle down, but you never know what is round the corner. Better to regret things you have done...than things you haven't eh!

I am a primary teacher, but i have done secondary also..and special needs. We can chat about this and the TEFL. When are you going to oz? We should try and hook up if i actually make it out there!

Came into school today...with lots of grief...don't think i need much more convincing.:)

Take care.... and lets get those back packs...flip flops and visas to the ready!

i'm also going to oz for a yr at the end of sept by myself and the tought of doing that is making me scared lol!! there is so much to do in oz as i have been before (5 weeks with a friend) but going solo is abit different!! i found a really good website that sorts out your visa, bank account and sim for your phone before you even go out, it also includes a social night on the day you arrive in oz so that you get to meet new people who are in the same shoes as you!

good luck with everything!!
