Buying a minivan / small RV for a 3-month road-trip

We're planning a 3-month+ trip round the Pacific NW from Jul-Oct inclusive, likely flying into Las Vegas and out from LA with a big loop around OR and WA States in between.

There's quite a bit of good advice here on TP already on this subject, so we've been scanning Craigslist to work out what vehicle would be most practical for the National Parks (we'll be doing a lot of hiking) and stay within our $10k budget. We were initially thinking of a simple car & tent combo (as we've done before) but this will be a longer trip so we'd like a little more comfort and protection from the elements than a tent affords - and maybe more protection from bears! So we're now looking at minivans (Class B) or even a small RV (Class C).

Has anyone got any advice, pointers, ideas or connections in the Las Vegas area that might assist in finding such a vehicle, and in registering and insuring it?

You never know, there might be someone out there who's about to complete a US road-trip, and is keen to pass on their wheels...?

Similarly, if anyone is thinking of acquiring wheels on the west coast in October, please send a PM as we may be able to help!

You can frequently buy Toyota RVs for under $2k. They're workhorses and hold their resale value.

I wouldn't worry about bears so much, just don't leave any food out.

Thanks for the tip, hamellr.

I didn't find anything anywhere near $2k when Googling Toyota RV's. has a few examples (they really are classics!) but they're pretty pricey given their age. And you've got to wonder how well a 1986-90 version would last a 4,000 mile road trip?

We always worry about bears - especially if camping in a tent!
