Hi everyone, first time on this site...really hope you can help.

I'm a 29 yr old teacher, spending every Sunday thinking about being the other side of the world, rather than doing lesson plans. :( I can't decide whether to just bite the bullet and go for a year...(thinking about going march 2006) or save lots of money and just go for 3 months in sept 2006. The trouble is.. i turn 30 in 4 weeks...so its now or never for the work visa as i will be too old next may!

I would love the whole year experience, but a bit nervous about going on my own..i know loads of people do it.... am i too old for this??!!!!

Also, anybody know how easy it is to get temp work as a teacher out there? I would love to keep my fingers in the pie so to speak.

Many thanks for any help/advice/encouragement anyone can offer... i'm so desparate for an adventure!

The school day is getting closer..ahhhhh

Hey,

Go for the Year!!!! Like you say they have that weird rule about being 18-30 for the WHV so take advantage of it! As for the teaching bit, I met a woman in Alice Springs who is a teacher and she was just fruit picking her way around before she picked up a teaching job in Sydney (which she started a couple of months ago). Before that she had been offered a teaching sponsorship in somewhere else. So there must be plenty of opportunities out there.

As for being to old etc... I also met a German woman who lives in Adelaide. She went backpacking on her own 4 years ago at the age of 76! She went from Adelaide to Darwin then right down the WA coast and back home! If she can do it....

Good Luck

Hi Scotsman,

Thank you! My head has been going round in circles for such a long time and you have definately helped me to make my mind up. Like you said...if someone can go at 76...30 is hardly over the hill is it!

I have been going on about this since i got back from America 9 years ago! I think my friends are going crazy.

As for the teaching thing...i don't mind having a bit of a rest from it all to be honest, but it would be a bonus if something came up. Well, i guess you don't know unless you try do you?

Thanks..

Hey Moni

You sound like me, Im going through exactly the same as you, Im 36, my friends are all settled down, and the time is now or never for me too.

If someone said to me they had 2 choices:
1/ go round the world for a year or
2/ settle down, get a mortgage, and chase their career

.... I would say "where's your ticket"

Dunno wots stopping me, probably the thought of being alone. But i do know this .... its driving me crazy and i know that once i take the plunge there'll be no stopping me!

Go for it!!!
(lol, says I)

Guys-i've never been anywhere in my life and i have booked my ticket to Oz-my parents are going to be soooo worried-haha-well i suppose thats not really that funny!

Take yourself off somewhere alone and see how you get on, i went up to London the other day alone and i loved being on my own-it was hassle free-would have been nice to have lunch with someone but it was great!!

Go for it...i faffed about for so many months!
