Hey ang

Well it all depends on what your interests are. If you are only here for 3 and 1/2 weeks and it's the first time to Australia then I'd suggest you see all the usual sites.

It can get expensive city-hopping. Australia is so big. And at that time of the year transport won't be as cheap as it could be during low-season.

Some suggestions outside your own ideas: Melbourne for 5 days (Phillip Island, Wilsons Promontory, Great Ocean Road, 12 Apostles), Gold Coast for 3 - 5 days - get down to Byron Bay from here, Brisbane for a couple of days, Cairns - see the Great Barrier Reef. All these are on the east coast of Australia. You might have to come back or stay longer! There is so much to see!

As for HK for a stopover... I haven't been but my mum ALWAYS uses it as a stopover to Manila from Australia. She's a shopoholic.

hey,

i replied to this before and then stupidly managed to delete my response and its only now that i have worked myself up enough energy to reply again!! you've gotta love technology!!

anyway, ayers rock is pretty much smack bang in the middle of australia, so its quite hard to reach if your driving. driving in the australian desert can be very dangerous if your not used to doing it, and the distances are very long. flying there would be the best option but this could prove expensive. if you do go then see some of the surrounding sights like kata tjuta (the olgas), kings canyon and alice springs perhaps?? the problem is that ayers rock and alice springs etc is pretty isolated from everything else once you get there, so travel costs may be quite expensive!

other suggestions include going up the east coast, something that a lot of backpackers do. maybe because of your limited time you might not make it as far as cairns, but maybe to brisbane or something like that. you could also go the other way and down to melbourne and the great ocean road, but i don't think this is such a popular option.

if your going to be in sydney for 5 days (cram as much as possible into that short time!!) around xmas and new years, you might want to book accommodation early because hotels/hostels tend to fill up around that time of year and prices could be at a premium.

good luck and hope this helps,
cheers,
