Seeking accessible/practical suburbs & areas of Vietnam

Travel Forums Asia Seeking accessible/practical suburbs & areas of Vietnam

I am attending a conference (as a professional photographer) in Singapore, during October and afterwards will be travelling to Vietnam spending a week in each of the following city/areas: Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang & Hanoi (total of 3 weeks).
I have booked flights and want to pre-book inexpensive hotels in the above for the first 2 days during each of my weeks stay and will then book further accommodation once I know where & what I want to go/do/travel/see etc.
When travelling I generally try to avoid tourist areas/sites and I am particularly interested in photographing local life - people just getting on with their lives, ‘street photography’. So the first place I visit in a village/town/city would be the market/local areas.
I would therefore appreciate any advice/recommendations as to what specific areas (central/accessible/interesting/cultural) in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang & Hanoi I should look for hotels in.
Many thanks

I live in Hanoi. You are photographer, so I think you are specially interested in somewhere like
- Hoa Lo prison, where used by the French colonists in Vietnam for political prisoners
- Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
- Temple of Literature is the first unniversity in VietNam
Traditional things:
- Cutural street foods
- 36 old streets (higlhly recommend)

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. Sorry, no personal details please. ]

Hi Raberman,

The firstly, Hanoi is very attractive city, and a lot of places to see.
If you want to visit famous places to understand about history, you can consult places following:
1. Ho Chi Minh Reunification
2. Hoa Lo Prision
3. Vietnam Museum of History.
4. Hoan Kiem Lake.
5. West Lake (Thanh Nien road)
6. Big Church
7. Van Mieu (the first university of Vietnam)
8. Bat Trang - Traditional Pottery Village.
If you need more detail places, don't mind for questions.
I am willing to give you some suggestion.
