I was watching a program on PBS about a group a Nepalese woman that were attempting to climb Mount Everest (1 of them made it to the top & has climbed to the to 3 times now). Watching this made me wonder how high some of our members here have been at?

1) What is the highest you have ever been (feet on ground, not in a plane)?

2) What is the highest you have ever spent a night?

and also did any of you suffer from any symptoms of "altitude sickness"?

I did an eight day overland 4WD adventure tour Kathmandu, Nepal to Lhasa, Tibet. On Day 2, we drove continuously from Neylam to Latse - 285kms - via Lalungla Pass (5,050m). This provided oustanding views of Mt Xixapangma (8,013m highest in Tibet), Mt Makalu (8,464m), Mt Lhotse (8,516m), Mt Chooyu (8,201m), and Mt Everest (8,848m).

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is NOT fun at all. I tend to suffer from it once I move above 3,000 - 3,500m. Sir Edmund Hillary said, "... It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves ..." Decide for yourself:

Humphreys Peak in Arizona (so lame, I know you have all probably been higher than that) approx.12,600 feet. Didn't sleep there though. The highest I have ever spent the night is on the 3 floor of the Holiday Inn in NY ;)

The highest I have spent the night, and the highest I have been were both on my trip to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

I did not make it to the summit.

Spent the third night at Mawenzi Tarn at an altitude of 14195 ft or 4330m. On the start of the fourth day it was obvious that I was not well ? it looked like I was developing pulmonary edema. I had a gurgling sound when I was breathing, was coughing constantly, was dizzy, had lost my appetite and was very, very tired. The head guide of my group decided it was best that I be taken off the mountain.

The highest I got was probably another 200m higher than that during the aclimitization hike on the third day.

I also got altitude sickness in La Paz, Bolivia, though not as bad as the pulmonary Edema on Kilimanjaro.

The highest I've ever gone is the Inka Trail hike...four days thru the mountains. Highest point in the hike was 4600 meters (13,800 feet), you do sleep in the mountains but at different elevations throughout. I think our highest sleeping stop was about 13,000 feet, just below the highest point...

Hey Greg...I think there is a chance for me to reach Kilimanjaro. I was fine at 4200 in Peru and I definitely think I could have gone higher . There is still hope for me!!! Did anyone else get sick in your group?

You definitely get Extra Points for hiking for 4 days at that altitute. At my highest all I did was get out of a jeep and take a couple pictures (that was enough to exhaust me ... in my own defense though it was at 5,050/meters (around 16,675 feet) in Tibet).
