Shanghai is the biggest city in China.Last I heard, the population was over 14 million. Bigger than the national capital, Beijing.

All about Shanghai

I love Shanghai, the first time I left my country I decided China to be my next country to build my future, I chose Beijing, the capital city, I work for a foreign company in Beijing, but after a few months my company set me up to Shanghai branch office. And I was so suprised when I got to Pudong airport, I spent my first day in Shanghai walking around Pearl Oriental Tower which we can see all of Shanghai, and I had dinner in Grand Hyatt Jinmao building where i think is the most romantic place i've ever seen in China.

I was born and raised in Shanghai, in the Bund in fact. Although the Shanghai I remember from 20 years ago bears little resemblance to the Shanghai of today. The architecture is an interesting mix of European (British, French, Spanish...), traditional Chinese (in the Old City), and comtemporary. However, the Pearl Oriental Tower must be one of the tackiest structure I've ever seen. I remember walking around in London and Paris and feeling oddly at home, because the buildings there looked so much like the part of Bund I grew up in. I don't really know how easy it would be for you to travel in Shanghai without a guide. There're plenty of foreigners in Shanghai and most young people there know some basic English, so you should be OK.

I love spending time in Shanghai. The TV tower and JinMao building are located in the eastern part of the city in a district called Pudong, which is on the other side of the Huangpu River from most of Shanghai. Although touristy, you should visit YuYuan, the Bund (Waitan), and Nanjing Road (Nanjing Dong Lu) at night.

Although the TV tower may or may not be tacky, it is quite impressive.

I am a native shanghainese.I can promise you shanghai is one of the most safty city in the world. All the shanghainese give warm welcome to the foreigners who come there. But I don't know why many foreigners are always worrying about the security of china. I feel depressed.
