Travel Forums General Talk Motorbike through asia??

Hi all fellow travelers..
Im currently living in Chiang Mai Thailand, and consiering buying a motorbike. They are relativly cheap, and seem like a freeing method of travel. I want to take it through thailand to bangkok and the cost, then after a few weeks there through laos and into china. I would really like to have two people on the bike and we would each have a backpack.
Question 1
has anyone done anything like this? What was your experience?
2.
Is it feasible-practical?
3.
How would the backpacks logistically fit on the bike?
4.
Is there anything that I should particularly be worried about.
5.
Does anyone wanna join me???

Thanks for any advice that you could give me regarding this topic.

Tiffany

China is not included in the "Convention on International Road Traffic of 19 September, 1949". Therefore international driving licences are not valid in China. Foreigners generally are NOT legally permitted to drive etc in China.

Yes. That includes motorbikes in China. Electric bicycles don't require licenced riders, but even if you considered this option ... the electric usually need recharging after 50kms.

China is a very different place to Thailand.

BTW Not sure if there's a land crossing between Laos & China. I understand you can go down the Mekong River from near Xishuangbanna(southern China)by freight boat. Don't know about coming up from Laos though.
