Travel Forums Asia NZ, Oz and SE Asia - the budget

I'm new to this forum and I've already found it to be fantastic! I'll get to offering my (little) advice about Europe where possible but I thought I'd send this up for anyone's help to start:

In late-January 2016 my girlfriend and I will be travelling to NZ, followed by the East coast of Oz, and then Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia. We will be in NZ for 1 month and then Oz for another, and then plan to spend 3-4 months in awe travelling some of the most beautiful and eye-opening places I've not yet laid eyes on (physically and digitally - I'm avoiding all photos online)!

We've booked the major flights and travel around Nz and Oz and know that accommodation for the two could be rather pricey. What I know less about, however, is pricing in Asia.

I've read various articles and persuasive accounts describing a near bewildering cheapness so long as you're welling (and able) to barter. I was just wondering whether anyone had done a similar trip and could recall approximate total expenditures?

We want to travel cheap as we're soon-to-be-student-discount-abusers, so hostels, canvas-less tents and only fools and horses-esque cars will be our preferences.

If anyone could enlighten us I would be HUGELY appreciative!

Thank you all in advance,

Hey Chris - you sound pretty organized. When I go to Asia and just wander around, eat, and sleep, I spend about $20USD a day - $5-10 for a bed, $3-$10 for food. Add in massages ($6+), drinking, gym fees, museum entrances, transport fees (taxis are cheap, busses are cheaper), you can get up to $40-$60 a day (and really sky is the limit, hey).

Hope that helps!
