With only 18 days I would not drive back and forth across the entire country, I would do a road trip on a circular route basing out of Los Angeles the west coast or New York on the east coast.

With that time-frame i'd fly to NYC, spend 2-3 until the shopping gets boring then fly to the west coast... Fly into Seattle, rent a car and drive south thru LA and San Francisco to San Diego...The west coast is much prettier then the middle of America..

If it gives you any idea, we drove through Oregon, California, Arizona, Utah, and Wyoming in 35 days and I feel like we still could have spent so much more time exploring.

So I would do like the others have said and maybe just drive Seattle to San Francisco, and then maybe down to LA, Vegas, and the Grand Canyon. I have driven across the United States 3 times and my record was 4 days and we saw nothing other than windshield.

I made my way through whole country. A complete circle from east coast to west, through north and south. Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, Yellowstone, Mountain Rushmore, Las Vegas, Dallas, Washington, Memphis, Nashville, Jack Daniels distillery, New York, Corvette factory in Kentucky, Mary Land, Niagara Falls and many more!

8000+ miles, 20 days, about 4500$

It was tough

In a while I will try to download map of my journey

We did a trip around the entire country once from North Carolina through the south and west to California where we visited San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco before heading back east through Salt Lake City, Utah; Denver, Colorado; Kansas City, Missouri through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, northeast to New York and down the east coast back to North Carolina. It was 10,624 miles and took us 6 weeks although we did quite a bit of sightseeing on the way. We also camped most of the way in a good old-fashioned canvas tent. There were 5 of us in a tiny car with a roof-top rack for the tent. We had a wonderful time.

We also once drove from California (near Los Angeles) to Winston-Salem, North Carolina in two days nonstop with three drivers alternating. That was not fun and I don't recommend it. It was necessary at the time.

You can drive the entire country in 20 days but I'm not sure how much you'll see. The Interstate highway system is designed to avoid all the towns along the way and you zip across the cities mostly on bridges above the cities. If you want to see the towns and how people really live, you need to get on regular roads and they are slower. You might do a little research and decide on a particular section of the country and spend you 20 days driving around that section. You would meet more people. Just a suggestion. :)

Hey man, already done it! Thanks though!

I agree, it is not that much fan to drive through country in 20 days, but I did enjoy this trip.

Last year I visited Los Angeles on 29th of december, I really ebjoyed it! One day I made my way from LA to half way to San Francisco. Nice road trip on highway 101 along the Pacific ocean.

Hope I could visit it once again.

If I had 20 days in the US and wanted to start in NYC and drive, I would do the following,
NYC to Boston
Boston to Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh to Chicago
Chicago to St Louis
St Louis to Memphis
Memphis to New Orleans
New Orleans to Miami
Miami to Savannah
Savannah to Nags Head or someplace on the outer banks
OBX to D.C.
D.C back to NYC via Philadelphia
