Hello everyone,

In my research on China I keep hearing/reading that taking domestic flights is a better option to taking the train because the cost is almost the same and obviously flying is far more comfortable.

Can anyone advise on this? I would prefer to go by train I think, but I'm interested to hear what those of you who have explored China think about this.

Last summer, I had five flights inside China. It is important to get discount tickets from travel agents. For example, the listed ticket price from Shanghai to Nanning (in south China) is 1600 yuan. The discount ticket I bought was 700.

Within western China, the flights have a very reasonable price. For example, from Guiyang to Kunming was 370 yuan. Kunming to Guilin or Nanning was about 400 yuan. (approximately 800 yuan = $100)

The train experience is interesting, but sometimes the most valuable item is time.

Many domestic flights do offer discounts. However, seasonal demand can affect this. As an example, the next "Golden Week" commences on 1st May, so there'll be domestic travellers all over the country. Especially people going back to their hometowns to see their families.

I agree with Data1000's comments about the time factor in train travel. China is just so incredibly large. Flying could be better for the much longer distances.

Dunno bought price much, but the flights inland are pretty bumpy.
Travellin on the train is fun, cramped but you meet new people.
