Consider Malaca and Kuching for Malaysia - they can keep KL!

If you're heading to Malaysia, can I suggest that you spend some time in Borneo? I just spent some time there in September and did a wild orangutan safari in the middle of the Jungle for only $150 USD for 3D/2N and it was one of the craziest experiences ever!

Koh Tao is not that cheap, neither is Phuket or Koh Phi Phi. If you head to Koh Phangan when it's not the Full Moon Party its an absolutely lovely island, and extremely affordable.

Where in Bali are you interested? Will you be staying in Kuta, Ubud, Seminyak, Nusa Dua (not recommended if you're on a budget?) For cheap places, check out hostels in Kuta, for something reasonable yet not as party-driven stay in Seminyak.

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]

Different countries means different visa requirements. Make Google your new friend! Some countries may require "proof of onward travel" just to leave the departure airport. If you can enter some countries free or need to pay for a visa depends on the passport you use to enter and for how long you will be in that country.

How much time you have determines if you actually see something or just buy the "been there" t-shirt and move on to the next photo op.

For hotel advice you should have an idea of how much per night you can afford to pay. (UK pounds, euros, US dollars, etc.) Everyone travels on a budget but some tourists have more "budget" available! Not all countries have the same cost of living. Singapore is now the most expensive country in Asia. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-31689124

Maybe include Bangkok in your trip. Bangkok is cheaper than some of the beach areas on your list. (Cheap city transportation in Bangkok!) From Thailand there is rail service from Chiang Mai all the way down Thailand, through Malaysia and ending in Singapore. http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm

Looks like you will have to do some flying. Factor in the cost of buying flights in your budget. Google up how to get between various locations. If you are ladies don't fall for a "Kuta Cowboy" in Bali because that will be another expense!

If you intend to use some sort debit card or cash card - take more than one! You could lose a single card or damage it and be out of spending money. Have a credit card available for emergencies that may come up. Some tourists get banged up using motor bikes, some get sick eating bad food in dodgy places to save money. Unplanned visits to hospitals can eat up some of your "budget !"

I find that an old fashioned laptop or desktop computer works better for research than using a phone. You can have several windows open comparing hotels vs location; compare costs of flights vs arrival times, etc.

Know the available weather for the month you travel. There may be severe weather in some places and ideal weather in other places. Something to research!

Pull up a map for the countries and cities you want to visit. Some distances may be a lot more than you think.
